This is Tulip's 60th anniversary limited edition set.

The Birth of Wa Bi

Fascinated by the Beauty of Japan Blue

The Development Story of Wa Bi. Wa Bi was brought into being by an encounter with a beautiful shining metal dyed with the distinctive Awa-Ai indigo, also known as “Japan Blue.” Meanwhile, Tulip has been producing crochet hooks that are both highly functional and stylistically beautiful, based on the technical capabilities of its craftsmen that have been cultivated and refined over the years. What if we were to enhance the beauty of our dignified tools by rendering them in this graceful Japan Blue? The joy of crocheting for the handicrafter will then surely be intensified by using them. This is how Tulip came up with the idea of Wa Bi. This product comes in an exclusive set—Wa Bi, with other carefully examined and selected handcrafted items that Japan is so rightly proud of.

ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip

The history of the ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip goes back to 2008. That year coincided with the 60th anniversary of the founding of Tulip Company Limited. This product is the fruit of trial and error in search of the best shape and material to meet customer demand for a crochet hook that does not fatigue the hand after long hours spent crocheting. Tulip now offers a limited model of the ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip, dyed the indigo color produced with Awa-Ai, called “Japan Blue.”Since it started producing crochet hooks in 1953, Tulip has sold them overseas as well as in Japan. From then on, Tulip has manufactured world-class crochet hooks, advancing the technology and knowledge of hand sewing needles, the production of which is one of Hiroshima’s traditional industries. As a high-end series, the ETIMO Crochet Hook with Cushion Grip now enjoys popularity in more than 50 countries.

Indigo-dyed Case

Like the crochet hooks themselves, the case that holds the crochet hooks and tools is also dyed with the indigo Awa-Ai pigment. The indigo liquid dye used is prepared using the technique of natural indigo dyeing by lye fermentation dating back to the Edo period. This safe and eco-friendly dyeing method makes the best use of natural materials while fermenting them. To dye the case used to store crochet hooks and tools for Wa Bi, Tulip has chosen murakumo-zome, a technique of dyeing creased fabric to produce an intricately beautiful indigo pattern that resembles clouds drifting across the sky.
Hand-dyed by skilled craftsmen, no two cases share exactly the same pattern. Inspired by kaishi-ire (a traditional clutch for Japanese tea ceremony and other situations), the case has been meticulously designed so that it can easily store tools and crochet patterns, exuding a distinctive Japanese ambience.

This certification mark shows that the product uses Tokushima’s locally produced indigo dye “Awa-Ai,” which has been passed down as traditional culture.

The fusion of the latest metal dyeing technology and traditional craftsmanship has created a crochet hook dyed in Awa Ai.
